Midi to USB glitch

From Jolly Zekkariya on 2023-06-27 01:35

I have been using jOrgan for a month now. It has been working perfectly fine however

it developed some issues when I tried changing from using a printer like midi connection

to using USB to midi cable (image of cable attached); ie, from yamaha dgx 650, to yamaha ez-j200

Simply said, the midi to USB cable inputs the sound but after a few notes jOrgan begins

playing unending static notes and sometimes random notes that I did not play on the keyboard.

I'm guessing there's some sort of incompatibility with the older version cable because

this never happens when I use the dgx 650 yamaha.

I have tried another older yamaha keyboard and it's still the same issue.

The static sounds keep going even when you remove the midi cable.

Thanks for your help in advance.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

From Roy Radford on 2023-06-27 01:54

I'm a bit out of touch with jOrgan these days but could this be an issue between systems

that use Note Off and those that use Note On, zero volume?

Have fun,

Roy. (UK)

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

From JohnR on 2023-06-27 08:07

There may be two separate issues at play here.

Perhaps the static can be eliminated by changing the audio buffer settings. Click on File, Customizer

and go to its last page using "Next" a few times. Try doubling the buffer size and report on any

improvement.

The unwanted notes may be caused by using a "cheap" MIDI-to-USB cable.

Best wishes,

JohnR

P.S. Your photo of the cable did not get through (as far as I know) because it made your post too big.

SourceForge hosts our Mailing List for free, and sets a size limit of 64 KB. The attachments caused a

size of 2.5 MB.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

From Jolly Zekkariya on 2023-06-28 05:57

Oh... sorry.

The buffer did not work. And I found a video on YouTube saying the same cable has issues. It basically

just doesn't send the off signal at times. I don't know how to fix it.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

From RickW on 2023-06-28 06:42

You will need to buy a better quality MIDI to USB Interface.

The cheaper ones don't have buffer memory, and when too many messages are sent they just can't cope.

They can cope with simple single keyboard tasks, but when there are multiple keyboards and especially

adding swell pedal messages, they fail.

A better quality Interface has buffer memory capacity and sends the overload messages on the next serial

clock pulse. The most dependable MIDI to USB Interface is the Roland UM-1 mk ll.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

From RickW on 2023-06-28 06:45

It will also be not sending other messages, but you won't notice them. It is only if a note on has been

sent, then the corresponding note off is lost, that is an obvious problem in MIDI. Missing other messages

simply go un-noticed.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

From Jolly Zekkariya on 2023-06-28 11:07

Thank you for your response. I'll just do that!

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

From Jolly Zekkariya on 2023-07-10 18:53______

I used the same cable on korg x5 and the glitch is almost reduced.

Update to the Tutorial on using Fluidsynth Backends

From JohnR on 2023-07-30 21:02

Hi all,

I have updated Graham Goode's Tutorial on using Fluidsynth Backends, which is a page

in the jOrgan InfoBase. This is to reflect changes that have been made in what backends

are now being offered on the jOrgan downloads page, "Fluidsynth". The link to the

Tutorial is:

https://jorgan.info/base/i/Instructions_on_using_the_PortAudio_driver_in_the_Fluidsynth_Extension.html

The changes I have made are found mainly in the introduction, and in the warnings which

I inserted before the main substance of the tutorial. Please advise me of any errors or

things which need to be worded differently.

Best wishes,

JohnR

Changes to jOrgan Discovery website

From JohnR on 2023-08-11 14:57

Hi all,

Today I made the following changes to the website:

1. Minor updates to the STARTING page to reflect current jOrgan downloads being offered.

2. An addition to the GALLERY page with a link to Mark Bugeja's Balzan page on his website.

This contains links to a number of audio recordings by accomplished organists using Mark's

Balzan jOrgan disposition. (I have apologized to Mark for this very late response to his

email suggesting that it be added to the GALLERY page. I received the email about two years

ago, and it slipped my mind at the time, only to be discovered in my Inbox a few days ago.)

Hello everyone.

Last week I up dated my Linux Mint computer to Mint 20.1 and installed the new

To those who do all the hard work thank you.

Steve,

Your post is much appreciated. Nothing surprising about jOrgan working "out of the box".

But receiving a post thanking those who have worked hard to create this amazing, free

program (Sven Meier foremost) is surprising - almost unheard of. One would think that

with about 2,000 downloads of jOrgan each year, this would not be the case. But such is

life.

appreciation to this wonderful team that made this possible for lowly users such as myself.

Avishai, Uganda.

Avishai,

There used to be, and I don't know what became of it. It doesn't seem to appear

in the jOrgan InfoBase, which I created out of the earlier jOrgan MediaWiki.

Perhaps I removed it by oversight, or by a regrettable decision. Perhaps Sven

removed it before all that.

I did make use of it once, long ago, and afterwards felt that I should have donated

more. Sven may like to comment on whether it can be revived. I suspect that

"optional" donations are not made very often.

However, your post is very welcome, and I thank you for it. One good way to show

our appreciation of jOrgan is to spread the word about it somehow. Over the years

I have tried to speak up for jOrgan on "The Organ Forum", but it does require

some discretion, as the only system people there seem to talk about is the very

expensive Hauptwerk. Any comments we make there should scrupulously avoid

criticizing HW or even GO. But some enthusiastic remarks about our positive

experiences with jOrgan may not go astray (hopefully).

need the software Jack for xp 64 bits and maybe 32bit

From ani2art on 2023-08-13 18:25

Hello all

i try to make contact here because i did not find any other option to get in touch elsewhere

i believe i mainly need jack for xp 64 bit, but just in case it does not work on my xp that

has no servicepack i would also try the 32 bit if anyone has it...sometimes 32bit things work

well on it when the 64bit versions do not

i was unable to find any of the 32 or 64 bit versions of jack by searching the official site

and the internet, but somehow after visiting plenty unhelpful links and sites i landed on jorgan

and according to this page someone here may have it and help me:

https://jorgan.info/base/i/Instructions_on_using_the_Jack_Audio_Connection_Kit_in_Windows.

installer. Please contact me for an experimental 64-bit version for WinXP 64-bit and Vista

64-bit. "

i am new to the site but some of the other tools here may be of interest to me if they can work

on xp...i am not a musician or anything so is not really a top priority, but i just thought i add

this if anyone has a xp tested archive or online file sharing directory of such tools because i

may need some interesting sounds and sound effects in the future and will likely start

experimenting with various tools i find on internet and since this looks like a solid community

with hopefully responsive and helpful people might as well start my journey here

From ani2art on 2023-08-15 14:53

Hello All

thanks to Mark i have now installed jack audio version 1.9.9.5

even though the installer claims to be version 1.9.9.6

the about window states otherwise

https://img001.prntscr.com/file/img001/KmFxxA6hQ4aCh_Wl1RtHJg.png

but looking at that i have a concern, it says the debug option is enabled

is this normal or should i turn it off, and if yes how to turn debug off?

i did not notice such debug option available in settings

i am also curious if anyone has an even earlier version of jack, preferably

smaller since this one is almost 100mb when installed

i am as well interested in alternatives if anyone has something smaller that

works on xp, especially if there is something that acts like a virtual card

and is selectable as sound device,

allowing to manually switch between the real and virtual sound devices

feel free to send me names of the software you think may be useful even if

you don't have an installer or archived version to share, i also tried many

things but they failed to work on my pc

of course an installer or archived version would be very helpful,

especially since as proven with jack, xp software could be very hard to find

my current xp is 64 bit with no service packs and no updates, it is using the

default netframework which may be 2 but below 3, newer/other framework fails

to install on it for some reason, but i can install java and other things just

fine and it seems i can run both 32 and 64 software in most cases and only

one of the types either 32 or 64 in other cases

depending on my available options at the time, i may be able to switch to 32 bit

xp if and when i will need to reinstall the system, so while not all 32 bit options

may work now on my 64 bit xp

i am still interested in them as well even so they may be lower priority right now

looking forward to hear your suggestions

thank you for the help________MOST RECENT POST IN THE THREAD

Appreciation for jOrgan

From Les Knoll on 2023-09-02 10:14_______

I saw in a post recently that someone had expressed appreciation to the creators

of jOrgan and there was a reply that there are apparently not a lot of people that

have done so. Let me add my name to the people that have!!

I have been using jOrgan since the v2 days after making the transition from

midiitzer. I found the change difficult mostly because I was also trying to create

my own soundfounts in the process and there was a lot to learn since I was building

a full blown theater organ with no simplifications. After almost giving up at least

twice, I got things working to my satisfaction and have been building on that ever

since.

The result is a 3/25 theater instrument I would not trade for any Allen, Walker or

Marshall & Ogeltree in existence! I equate the versatility of jOrgan to the way some

phone users tout Android. You can make it do anything you want. So much so that I

was making jOrgan do things that it was not intended to do (moveable capture action)

long before the feature was actually available. It was in there somewhere, but just

had to come out! Since then I have come up with other ideas for innovations, and

jOrgan did not disappoint. I have even made it interface a programmable Arduino-based

rhythm machine, playable through soundfounts so the percussions are expressive along

with the organ. jOrgan is without a doubt the most versatile application of its type

available. Hats off to Sven and the entire crew for making jOrgan what it is and

keeping it running, May we always have jOrgan!!

Les Knoll

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

From steve on 2023-09-02 16:25

I too started with v2. I found jOrgan when I first started using Linux.

I wanted to make a digital copy of the ex -Paradise Theatre Chicago 5/23 Wurlitzer.

With the help of friends who have theatre organs and borrowing samples from other

organs I now have a 5manual 42 rank theatre organ.

My son who is a pipe organ builder/restorer and organist is the one responsible for

the organ going from 23 ranks to 43 with the addition of stops such as a Vox chorus

and a 5 rack String.

On his last visit my son said "To much reverb dad." I told him to open the setting

page and change the reverb setting. He was astonished to find he could change

everything but the trems (Not figured that out yet)

jOrgan is so versatile that with a little bit of help you can do almost everything

with it. With a few clicks of the mouse I can go from big theatre organ to a

cathedral organ or small church organ and the Hammond C3.

The console I am using is what remained of the Compton organ from Royalty Theatre

Halifax West Yorkshire UK after the woodworms eat the top. Today I will collect

the original keyboards and so add second touch to the Great as well as the accomp

and pedals which in jOrgan is again just a few clicks of the mouse.

To the team that keep jOrgan going and improving and to Sven a big thank you.

Regards to you all.

Stephen Rowley.

Problem with "The Organ Forum"

From JohnR on 2023-09-10 14:54

Some wise guy has decided that users of that forum should be REQUIRED to change their

password every year. A couple of days ago I tried to access the site, only to be greeted

by a "Change your password!" page. It told me that my attempts to enter a "new" password

did not match, and of course I made sure next time that they did match - only to be told

the same thing. So I am locked out of the Forum and lacked out of informing them that

their page is losing their membership at a rate of one-twelfth with each successive month!

I am asking that someone on our Mailing List who also belongs to "The Organ Forum" send

them a post telling them that they have a problem. It wouldn't hurt to tell us that you

have done that.

Best wishes,

New Sample-set

From Dr. Mark Bugeja MD on 2023-10-09 17:45

Hi Everyone,

I am close to releasing a new sample-set. I have created it for GrandOrgue, whilst

at the same time testing a new software tool called GOODF. This tool has

significantly helped with its creation and saved countless hours in writing the odf code.

jOrgan is a bit more challenging for me and I would like assistance.

If there is anyone who would like to volunteer to convert this new sample-set

for use by jOrganists, please let me know. There is still some work being done as the

sample-set is beta tested but I would like to release the work the soonest possible

and certainly before the year's end. There is another sample-set planned but that

will very likely be for next year.

hesitate, but I'd be glad to help with your guidance.

John Maher

From Dr. Mark Bugeja MD on 2023-10-10 08:14

Hi John,

Thanks for offering. "With my guidance".... that's what I cannot do which is why

I asked for assistance.

Have you ever tried converting a GO sample-set for jOrgan? There is not just the

setting up of an sf2 file with all the audio samples in it but there is the graphics

you will need to reconstruct from images I already have.

I was hoping someone from the older generation of jOrganists to offer.... someone who

has already proven himself in the past.

Besides this organ is a challenge and is unlike any other available to date because

of the way the tabs and stops are set up.... so someone with knowledge and experience

is going to have to wreck his brain somewhat.... certainly not for a beginner in the

field. It was a challenge even for GrandOrgue to do. It is only thanks to Lars Palo

that the sample-set was possible to build for GO. He understood the German mechanism

on the real instrument and was able to translate that to the virtual sample-set.

Hi all,

I think I fit that description. However, I am struggling to complete what has to be

my last jOrgan disposition - despite the fact that I had decided the Norden

Schnitger would be the last one.

I am grateful to Mark for making his latest sample set available for jOrgan users

to have and enjoy, and to John Maher for his willingness to get involved. And I am

not surprised that there was no immediate rush of offers to bring it to reality.

His second post on the subject indicates that it will not be an easy task. However,

my reaction to the first post was that here is a great opportunity for a team

effort. It is not the case that one person has to do it all. It lends itself to

various people addressing separate parts of the project. I am offering to give

guidance on the making of the soundfont and the actual disposition, but I do not

have much to contribute on the graphics side of things.

There has been a recent major development of the Viena soundfont editor program,

whereby spreadsheet techniques can be used to deal quickly with the many numerical

entries that have to be made. I mentioned it on the Mailing List when it first

appeared just over a year ago (I think), and I have been using it extensively with

my latest work. It has saved me many hours of repetitive effort.

I am sure that I am not the only person who greatly values what jOrgan has allowed

us to do in emulating the pipe organ sound. This has involved the efforts of jOrgan

enthusiasts, past and present. Here is a chance for new people to learn how to join

them, and pass on to others what can be done with Sven's amazing jOrgan program.

Best wishes,

Stop activated SysEx messages

From RickW on 2023-12-08 18:16

Hello jOrgan group

I have an application that I think jOrgan can achieve, but I have hit a roadblock

in trying to set it up.

I am trying to start small (crawl before I can walk) but not even getting one knee

in front of the other.

I want to click a Stop ON on the computer screen and have it send a SysEx message.

SysEx: F0 2B 01 23 cc nn F7

There will also be a Stop OFF message but that will probably sort itself out

once I have ON working.

I have started with a blank Console, linked the Classic Skin, added a Connector

Element and a Stop Element. On the Stop Element I have added Activated and

Deactivated "Messages".

This is where I get stuck.

I have tried to enter MPL Messages to the Activated and Deactivated.

set F0, set 2B, Set 01, set 23, set 01, set 02, set F7

As soon as I leave the line the entire line is erased.

Why won't it save this message?

What am I doing wrong?

Hoping someone might have some thoughts.

Thank you all.

From Graham Goode on 2023-12-08 23:42

I tried entering each value separately (after the F0 that all sysex

messages begin with), and the 'set 2B' always fails. All the other

values are accepted. I would imagine that Hex 2B is larger than the

'255' max value and therefore cannot be used.

Double-check that part of the sysex message, as it's not possible :)

Max value should be 127. BTW doesn't jOrgan take it's input in Decimal format?

Your message should begin with "set 176 ". jOrgan MPL , not F0. Also, whatever

the 2B refers to, stop or keyboard/manual/division, has to be in MPL. If you are

intercepting a setting from the physical console, the message is "equal 176 (or

whatever the sequential number of the manual is, possibly, 176, 177, 178, etc).

If you tell us exactly what the message is supposed to effectuate, we might be able

to formulate the message for you.

Also, if Sven happens to be monitoring our posts, he may help .....

jOrgan MIDI messages MUST be expressed in DECIMAL -- not HEX.

The correct "Messages" string is:

set 240, set 43, set 1, set 2, set 247

Thank you all for giving this some thought and for your suggestions.

These SysEx messages are to activate/deactivate Stops in a real pipe organ relay system.

We want to provide a remote mobile "control" of a pipe organ.

If I write the MPL as Decimal will the external system still understand it?

The instrument is 1,000km away from me. I can organise a test a bit over an hour from home.

I was actually planning to build a test jOrgan for the setup.

Thanks

Rick.

Hi Rick,

I doubt if any of us here can answer that. You will just have to try, once you have

ironed out the correct MPL.

I added "Activated" to the zero messages for a combination in one of my jOrgan

dispositions, and then pasted this:

240, set 28, Set 01, set 23, set 01, set 02, set 247 .

jOrgan had no problem accepting it.

Your 2B looked more like a typo than a HEX number. I was also suspicious about

the upper case "Set", and it obviously got through. But what do I know about these

things? In a case like this my practice is to try it. If it isn't right, the sky

isn't likely to fall in, and my computer will probably cope with the error and do

nothing. At the very least, I may simply have to reboot (and hope is wasn't too

long since I saved my work).

I wish to thank all who have contributed to this thread so far. So Jim, you see

that jOrgan is still very much alive and kicking. If anyone cares to search for

"jOrgan files" they will see that over 40 people download a version of jOrgan in

the previous week. That comes to over 2,000 a year. O.K., so the Mailing List has

been very quiet. Yes, some of those 2,000 may have problems and decide that jOrgan

is not worth any further attention. They could easily inquire and ask for help. On

the other hand, they may all simply be playing jOrgan successfully and enjoying it!

I did a Google search on "jOrgan Discussion Forum". Try it. You will get a big surprise.

Best wishes,

John

Thank you all again for giving this some thought.

Thank you particularly Lynn for your valuable input.

So in Decimal I am able to enter MPL which is good.

I think my message needs to look like this:

Stop ON set 240, set 43, set 1, set 34, set 1, set 1, set 247

Stop OFF set 240, set 43, set 1, set 35, set 1, set 1, set 247

I am able to trigger these messages from a Stop on the jOrgan screen Console and have

it send messages to MidiOx.

In MidiOx I am able to see them as Decimal or Hexadecimal

That is the progress I needed, thank you.

Now to see if it controls the real pipe organ.

Regards

Rick

effectuate?

Hi John

I am hoping it will actually move real stop tabs on a real Pipe organ.

The real Pipe organ has a Digital relay/control system with these underlying MIDI addresses.

The real console is in an awkward position. We want to be able to remotely drive it from

a MIDI capable console that is able to be located in a better position.

Rick.

Query about ASIO backend

From Kent Christiansen on 2023-12-17 11:38

Hello!

I'm so sorry to barge in, but I need help from the experts.

Please allow me to introduce myself: I a musician who "put it all away" years ago,

and have recently determined to get back into it. I've always had a functioning

(if meager) music production environment on my computer (well, since 1998, anyway),

and have worked in the fields of entertainment, electronics, computers, music and

video production; in short - lots of music-adjacent fields. I mention this only so

that you may know I am computer literate in addition to being a rusty performer.

I have exhausted the means I know of in trying to find this file; hence, my reluctant

intrusion into this group.

On this page...

https://jorgan.info/base/i/Instructions_on_using_the_PortAudio_driver_in_the_

Fluidsynth_Extension.html

...there is a link to an ASIO-enabled backend for fluidsynth which I believe,

considering all constraints, will give me the ability to send the jOrgan audio

stream into my DAW for further processing.

The file is "fluidsynth-1.1.4-asio.zip".

There is also a link to this same file in this archive:

https://www.mail-archive.com/fluid-dev@nongnu.org/msg02844.html

However, neither link takes me to the file.

Instead, I am presented with an opportunity to create an account with Microsoft 365,

which I would rather not take at this time.

I thought perhaps one of the readers of this missive (e-missive? No.) might know of

a working link to the file in question.

Thank you.

Kent

Hi Kent,

Fluidsynth 1.1.4 is a very old version.

See if you can use the PortAudio ALL (which should have ASIO) from

https://sourceforge.net/projects/jorgan/files/fluidsynth/Fluidsynth%202.1.0/

Kind regards,

GrahamG

From Kent Christiansen on 2023-12-18 04:13

ThanK you, Graham.

I have tried the 2.2.8 as well as the PortAudio ALL.

From what I can gather (via Dependency Walker), PortAudio ALL seems to require Windows 10.

My machine is frozen circa 2016, Windows 7 64 bit (Java 64 bit too), and will likely remain

that way until I can afford new hardware.

I have also tried the 2.2.8, and it was unrecognized in the Configuration menu for fluidsynth.

That's why I zeroed in on 1.1.4. It appeared to be working on older hardware /OS, similar to

what I must live with for the time being.

I will try the 2.1.0 version you kindly suggested.

Pi5 and jOrgan

From Don Anderson on 2023-12-18 03:33

Hi,

I have been using jOrgan on Pi4B and Pi400 very successfully for quite a while

but I just bought a Pi5 to try it out. Everything transferred over and jOrgan

is up but I have "Fluidsynth failure". I have yet to find a solution. Anyone tried

Pi5 and had this problem?

Thanks,

Don.

Don,

RPi installs Java 11 by default. The older jOrgan versions for RPi probably required

Java 8 or lower. The only jOrgan version currently being offered is for 64-bit (do a

search on "jOrgan files"). It will work with Java 11. If you have to use an earlier

(32-bit) jOrgan version, it can be made to work by importing to the usr/lib/jorgan/lib

folder a newer version x-stream library to replace the existing one. Let us know if

you need further details.

I am not using RPi5, but I am certainly using RPi4B (as my desktop). In order to have

jOrgan working easily with it by means of the 64-bit jOrgan version, I installed the

64-bit version of the RPi OS. It works like a dream, and has Fluidsynth Version 2.

It does have, in my opinion, a much better reverb than Version 1, so for me that is a

definite plus.

The only other reason I can think of for your Fluidsynth failure is a 32/64 bit conflict.

Best wishes,

JohnR

Not sure what to do about it but everything else seems fine.

Brian,

I don't know if you have made any headway getting Jack running on your Pi5 but I

have had no problem with it on mine. I believe Jack was already installed as was

jconvolver and other things needed for an organ. I just run /usr/bin/qjackctl and

after some setup it's perfect. I have also tried it with two different USB audio

devices with no problems so I hope that's encouraging.

I still can't get this v.3 of Fluidsynth to work with jOrgan (so no sound yet) and

I'm wondering if it won't work until someone does some programming. As much as I

really like the Pi5 in the official little red and white box we use Pi400 in the

organs we build because we can overclock them to almost the speed of Pi5 plus it

is completely passive cooling - I hate having to run fans in a church organ.

After many years of using jOrgan it still impresses me every day thanks to all you

contributors, especially Sven.

Don.

Brian,

One way forward, if you must use jOrgan with RPi5 (until such time as someone creates

a suitable jOrgan version) is to abandon the "direct" use of Fluidsynth, and instead

create a Generic Sound jOrgan disposition along the lines of what Marc-Paul Allen

showed us some time ago. I had great success doing that when I moved to using RPi4B

(but 32-bit) for my desktop. It does of course use jackd to connect it all up. But it

works very well. Now that I have moved to RPi4B and 64-bit, I don't have to do that,

as jOrgan works very well using the one jOrgan version for RPi which is being offered

on the "jOrgan files" web-page, and I find the FS2 reverb to be very much to my liking.

Your problem with jackd at the moment reminds me of what I found happening quite often

back in my old jOrgan/Puppy Linux days. It seems that sometimes jackd will not start

unless there is some other suitable audio program installed and running. You could, for

example, try installing the excellent Linux reverb program, zita-rev, even if you don't

actually use it. However, you may need to run it before you try to run qjackctl. It's

worth a try, and its reverb is actually very good.

Its disadvantage is that if you have favourite reverb settings, you have to set them up

each time. There may be a work-around, using command line methods, but I'm not enough

of a computer nerd to be doing that. On my organ console, I have two RPi 3B's in use,

with jOrgan 32-bit working normally. This is the set-up I use, with the FS reverb turned

down to "0". I can do most of the reverb settings on the zita-rev GUI before jOrgan has

finished loading. You will gather from all this that I do not have a "headless" set-up.

Christmas wishes to you and to all,

JohnR
